Spirit

Love undulates
Like a serpent’s seduction,
Sings a lullaby
To rock the Tree of Knowledge.
Baptism drips in resin,
Love sweats in ecstasy.
His spirit oxidizes
Like the rotten apples
Left on her nightstand.

Young as You Are

Our limbs spread,
Welcome and comfort
With generous shade.
We lack brittle resin
Found in other trees.
Young as you are,
Old as I am,
Our roots entwine,
Strengthen
As branches rise.
Mockery is for now –
Immortally is forever,
Long after
Seeds take root.

Roller Coaster Train

We were approaching the last stop,
Coney Island – Stillwell Avenue,
but the N train didn’t stop –

it continued upwards on tracks
that rose above the station
until it made that sudden descend

and plunged into the ocean
where the real mermaids waited
over an hour to get on.

Dangerous Times (2008)

Beneath a tree,
a boy sits on wounded soil.
He forgets to pray,
falls asleep instead.
A cloud comes,
Brings wind to scythe the land.
Bones of the dead
follow its gust.
His father’s tree
can’t protect him –
it bleeds instead.
The boy’s body went AWOL –
Traces of dust
Now fill his boots.

Change

everything changed
when the lights went out

she can’t sleep
when anxiety screams

answers repeatedly
slapped by questions

blood-etched membranes
squeeze her baby blues

her 3rd eye sees in the dark
turns blind in the light

cerebral walls shrink
omit inner space

moon crosses sky
in a mood swing

breeze comes in
but leaves in fear

the clock knows best
not to interfere

something’s going to happen
tonight or tomorrow

but she’s an illusion
the mirror never lies
